Physical Education

Intent:

At the Rodillian Academy, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it plays in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles and making a positive impact on physical, mental and social health. The intent of our ambitious PE curriculum is to provide all students with high quality PE and sport provision, not only as a participant but in leadership roles such as a coach or official in I variety of activities. It is our vision for every child to succeed and aspire to be the best they can be, as well as to lead physically active lifestyles beyond their years at Rodillian. We strive to inspire our students through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our young people at Rodillian to understand and appreciate the benefits of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. Whilst at The Rodillian Academy, students will learn about the different components of physical fitness and their importance in sport and everyday life. We also place a huge emphasis on the core values of sport and believe that these values can help develop students in every aspect of their lives, increasing social mobility. At Rodillian, we teach our students about the importance of following codes of conduct, etiquette, discipline, teamwork, leadership and communication skills. Through PE, we instil our core values and transferable life skills such as resilience (growth mindset) and mutual respect, as well as empowering them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport through our extra-curricular programme and our sporting academy pathways.

At Rodillian we offer talented students a pathway into our Netball and Rugby academies. Here they will receive expert coaching, focusing upon mastery of skills and increasing their technical and tactical knowledge and application to the game. Students will train as part of their squads during their PE lessons, applied resilience lessons, extra-curricular and strength & conditioning sessions. Our programmes are well organised offering continuity through the teams and year groups. The academies allow the students confidence in their ability and awareness of the game to grow, and also develops interests and aspirations to pursue the sport outside of school at clubs or at representative level. The traditional values of hard work, commitment, respect and resilience are all held in high esteem and regularly focused on in lessons. The students will take part in differentiated, safe and well-constructed training sessions with the aim of developing a training culture which ensures our rugby and netball players are in the best physical condition to perform optimally. We also aim to develop a knowledge and understanding of the importance of training and preparing for sport correctly. This holistic approach to the development of our students supports the school’s ethos in encouraging our students to aspire for greater things which will in turn improve their life chances.
