U14 County Cup Success

On Saturday 9th March, The Rodillian academy once again were proud to host the Yorkshire County Cup Finals. We were disappointed that only our U14 (Year 9) squad were the only Rodillian team to make it to the finals, given the success this season of both our U15 (Year 10) and U16 (Year 11) squads within our very competitive fixtures circuit.

On a horrendous morning, with horizontal rain and swirling wind, the U14 squad played with an incredible amount of intelligence and discipline. Battling the elements in the first half, the Rodillian team kept the ball tight, battling hard to work their way up the pitch against a tenacious Prince Henrys Grammar School defence. Like the Rodillian side, the Prince Henrys outfit had had a superb season and had been undefeated for two years. However, the confident manner in which the Rodillian side stuck to the game plan, only moving the ball into the wide channels once the hard work had generated momentum was superb, resulting in arguably the try of the day as the ball was driven forward in an effective driving maul, only then to be moved wide with accuracy and speed to score in the opposite corner.

Going into the break 7 – 5 down but now with the elements behind them, the Rodillian team executed the game plan to perfection. Pinning the Prince Henrys team into the corners with superb kicks from Harrison Brown, Charles Franklin and the outstanding Taylor Lloyd. Resolute defence from Ben Littlewood, Archie Milner and Luke Wade forced mistakes which allowed the outstanding Alfie Longstaff, Man of the Match Oliver Glover and Ethan Haley to pull the strings in attack and keep the score board ticking over. After a superb carry from Zak Perry, following a turn over from Ben Watson, the ball was kicked to the corner and the resultant error by the Prince Henrys Fullback was pounced upon by the powerful Joe Taylor. Moments later the ball crossed the Prince Henrys Try line to take the score to 19 -7 and out of sight.

This was a superb performance and a number of wise heads in the Rodillian coaching staff commented that this was a superb, mature performance of some note and a display of control and accuracy which stands this squad in good stead for the future.

Well done to all involved and thanks to all of the Rodillian staff for their support on the day.
