Students look at the history of jewellery design and at jewellery throughout cultures and history. This helps to inform the students to develop their own design ideas.
They create a sketchbook of ideas. Students use various media to render their designs. They record their final piece using digital cameras.
They have to have good practical skills. Students make their jewellery using a wide range of materials. Woods, metals and plastics and all the tools and equipment necessary to complete a quality end product.
The students need to be good reflective learners. They evaluate their finished designs and effort in order to improve on their next project.
They are assessed throughout the projects using the 6R’s.
A final assessed project is for the students to find their own individual client and design and make a piece of bespoke jewellery for them.
This course relies on the students taking responsibility for their own development. For example, if they have not got the materials they need for their design project, what are they going to do about it?
