Kings School, Macclesfield Rugby Sevens Festival

Year 7 Festival:

The Year 7 sevens squad travelling to the leafy suburbs of Macclesfield to take part in the prestigious rugby sevens festival in high spirits. After a successful season so far, the sevens squad have been incredibly impressive based upon the hard work they are applying within training.

The squad faced Sandbach School in the first round of their pool and after a superb performance came out winners in impressive style. This set the tone for the remaining pool games with victories over the hosts Kings School and then Wilmslow School eventually seeing Rodillian top the pool and going through to the winners pool.

Rodillian took time to adapt to the pace and experience of the schools within the winners pool, struggling to impose themselves upon the opening game. With seconds remaining, Rodillian managed to drag themselves back into the game eventually drawing with Lancaster Grammar School. Now adjusted to the pace and physicality of the teams within this pool, Rodillian defeated Cheadle Hulme School and the focus soon switched to the final game against tournament favourites St Ambrose College. St Ambrose College are undefeated this season within their impressive circuit and the boys knew that this would be a tough challenge.

In what was an incredibly physical and fast paced encounter, Rodillian crossed the line first, displaying superb hands against a strong defence. However, St Ambrose responded well and crossed the line twice in quick succession. With minutes left the Rodillian squad displayed outstanding resilience and scored to draw the game.

The boys thrived within this environment and this experience will live long in the memory of both students and those parents who travelled to support the team.

Year 10 Festival:

It was the first outing of the season for the year 10 7’s squad, they took a depleted squad over to Kings Macclesfield and made a very good impression showing superb resilience and camaraderie throughout.

In their first game they took on Sandbach School, with the boys starting strong however a kick over the top saw Sandbach score the first points. After this boys rallied and put together an excellent performance playing some superb rugby to win the first game 17 – 15. In their second game Rodillian took on a familiar foe in Queen Ethelburgas, playing some superb flowing rugby to win the contest 19 – 14. Their third game saw the Rodillian boys take on Audenshaw, who defended well early but a lack of experience saw Rodillian wear them down unlocking the defence to win the game 35 – 7. After this the boys had their final group game against the prestigious Warwick School, an early injury to Cam Jones left the boys deflated, however they stuck to their tasks, putting pressure on Warwick but to no avail. Warwick responded placing lots pf pressure on the Rodillian defence getting around the outside to score two quick tries. After the half Rodillian started brightly but again failed to breakdown a well organised defence. Warwick again managed to unpick the Rodillian defence for another 2 tries with Rodillian losing 24 – 0

This loss meant that Rodillian finished second in their group and after a long wait came up against a very strong Ambrose College team who managed to despatch the depleted Rodillian squad. It has to be said that the effort and resilience shown by the lads was superb with the boys sticking together through out.
