Following a superb victory the week before against Silcoates, the Year 8 Rugby team entered the second round of the Yorkshire Cup in high spirits. However, Harrogate Grammar School started brightly and following some strong ball carries into the heart of the Rodillian defence, the Harrogate Grammar School winger crossed the line within five minutes of the start of the game. The Rodillian Academy team drew strength from their captain, Sam Patterson who spoke well beneath the posts. From the restart, Rodillian exerted pressure on the Harrogate team and following a strong drive from the Rodillian forwards, Jake Ablett powered over the line in what was one of many impressive ball carries from the tight head prop. Mason O’Malley then skipped through the Harrogate defence to sprint beneath the posts (converting his own try) to take the Rodillian Academy into a well-deserved lead at half time.
The Academy started the second half as they finished the first, with impressive ball carries from Callum Cannings, Jake Ablett, Adam Freeman and Rhys Evans. Sam North led the defence with some outstanding tackles and Mason O’Malley pinned the Harrogate team back in their own half with some impressive kicks.
The Rodillian Academy came out deserved winners in a well fought victory and now look forward to a re-match with a strong side from Rippon Grammar School. The coaches would like to praise the commitment and passion displayed from all of the boys in the team and Ms Davis (Head of Year 8) would like to congratulate the team.
